Imperial Ballroom Roof Design

The surface of Hyatt's ballroom roof is changed into a landscape design of the foothills and mountain vista that are so distinctive of Calgary by the use of four shades of rock. Views of the river valley, foothills, and mountains, along with a chinook arch in the sky, may be seen from the hotel tower's east side. The coulee slopes are represented by the shapes in the foreground.

The pattern transforms into an abstraction of a snow-covered mountain, the sun in a dramatic sky, and foothills and reflections below when viewed from the other side (looking west). An abstract pattern made up of a nice array of shapes and rhythms inspired by the Calgary environment will appeal to viewers from the north or south ends.

The hotel project developers collaborated with Calgary artist Brent Laycock RCA to create the rooftop landscape, which was then realized by the project contractors. This piece of art is exceptional since it is one of the biggest pieces of art made specifically to be seen from the air, whether the viewer is in a high hotel or an aeroplane.

"The range of mountain, foothill, prairie, and parkland settings that are easily accessible from Laycaock's residence in Calgary serve as the inspiration for much of his work. His love of the vastness of the earth and sky is evident in a lot of his landscape paintings, which he develops into compositions that are somewhat abstract.
